School is back in session which means the 3:30 snack routine has started. Even while I was growing up, the first thing I did when I got home was go to the fridge or pantry and find something to eat. Kids eat lunch no later than 12:30 and some before 11:00 AM, so by the time 3:30 rolls around the tummies are grumbling. “I don’t want you to spoil your dinner”. Raise your hand if you’ve said that before. Let’s talk about some healthy snack options that won’t spoil dinner.

Chips, popcorn, and cookies; these are examples of the quick and easy, unhealthy after-school snacks that kids tend to grab These are they snacks that will spoil their dinner because with an open bag in front of your child, they will keep going back in for more. Healthy snacks in the pantry and refrigerator should be placed at eye level and within reach of the child. Don’t expect your child or teen to cut their own veggie sticks. Having pre-cut veggies, fruits, or cheese sticks ready is guaranteed to make snack time quick and easy.

While enjoying these snacks, wash them down with a cold glass of water. Avoid the sugary juices with artificial sweeteners. Carbonated drinks should also be avoided during this time. The carbonation fills the stomach up resulting in a feeling of fullness.
