The Problem with Sugar
By Lydia Wallie, Nutrition Director
When you’re stressed, when the world seems like it’s falling apart, and when you just don’t feel good, sugar is always there for you. It’s available nearly everywhere and in so many processed foods. So you drive through Krispy Kreme, consume the donuts, and what happens next?
Insulin is increased and insulin helps transport tryptophan speedily to the brain which increases serotonin. This gives the effect of momentary happiness or ‘comfort’. However, comfort foods only temporarily improve mood and then there’s a crash afterwards...potentially a sugar coma, lack of energy, or food fatigue.
This is just the short-term result. Let’s consider some of the long-term risks associated with chronic processed/refined sugar consumption.
Cardiovascular disease (1, 2)
Depression (3, 4)
Diabetes (5)
Immune system inhibition (6)
Obesity (5)
Poor cognitive function (7)
