3 Strategies to Save Money on Food
By Lydia Wallie, Nutrition Director
Buy local. Local farmers who you know personally or through farmer’s markets often sell meat/produce for a lower price than the closest equivalent that you will find in the store. Supporting local businesses also helps your community which can be helpful/strategic when everyone is rushing to large grocery stores during disasters (snowpocalypse, etc.).
For more details on local options that I recommend, message me on Slack to schedule a Nutrition Session or discuss at your next Check-In.
Learn to cook healthy meals. Instead of eating out, learn to cook, save on food costs, and your health will thank you down the road.
“We found on average, it is almost five times more expensive to order delivery from a restaurant than it is to cook at home. And if you’re using a meal kit service as a shortcut to a home cooked meal, it’s a bit more affordable, but still almost three times as expensive as cooking from scratch.” (1)

Stock up during sales and buy in bulk. When you purchase more significant amounts of certain items that don’t go rancid quickly or that you can freeze, you’ll have more food available when there are shortages and save money in the long run. With inflation, stocking up on typical food items that will likely increase in price may also create savings. Just make sure to check expiration dates and organize.
