Eat Hemp Hearts for a Balanced Macro Source and Hormone Support
By Lydia Wallie, Nutrition Director
Hemp hearts/seeds can be an excellent addition to your diet. However, similarly to poppy seeds, don’t consume them if you’re subject to drug testing. If you don’t fall into that category, here are some hemp heart nutritional aspects you may benefit from:
Balanced macros.
“Hempseed has commonly been claimed as one of the most nutritionally complete food sources due to its high nutritive traits. It typically contains 25–35% lipids [fats] with a unique and perfectly balanced fatty acids composition; 20–25% proteins easy to digest and rich in essential amino acids; 20–30% carbohydrates, a great part of which are constituted in dietary fiber, mainly insoluble; as well as vitamins, and minerals.” (1)
Hormone and brain support.
Fats/lipids are the building blocks for hormones, and our brain is mainly composed of fats (~60%). (2) This is why good-quality fats are crucial to a well-rounded diet. Raw hemp seeds in particular, contain healthy fat sources of unprocessed omega-6 and omega-3.
How can you obtain more hemp seeds in your diet? Try this Iced Hemp Milk Latte (no coffee) or add it to a smoothie.
